Diwali gifts for housing society members in Mumbai
Updated 12 October 2026.
Every year someone on the committee gets the job: one Diwali gift for every flat, ready before Lakshmi Puja, without the WhatsApp group arguing about it. This page is the short version of how to do it well.
Decide three things first
- Count: number of flats plus building staff (watchmen, housekeeping, gardener, lift operator). Staff are usually a separate list.
- Budget per flat: most societies stay in a small fixed range per flat from the maintenance or festival fund. Agree the number in the group before anyone shops.
- Delivery: door to door by the committee on one evening, or kept at the security cabin with a list. Door to door gets seen; the cabin pile gets forgotten.
Gift ideas that residents keep
- A diya with the family name or flat number on it. It gets lit on Diwali night instead of going into a drawer.
- Dry fruit or mithai boxes with a society card. Safe, but every other sender gives the same thing.
- A small plant (tulsi, money plant) in a clay pot with a name tag.
- Rangoli colour kits for flats with kids.
- For staff: a sweet box plus the cash bonus they actually need. The gift is the thank-you, the cash is the point.
Why naming each gift works
A gift that says Shah family, B-704 tells people the committee thought about them, not just about the vendor. It also solves the practical problem: nothing gets swapped or skipped, and the person delivering can tick names off a list.
Wording for the tag
- Shubh Deepavali, [Family name] family. With love from [Society name] CHS.
- Happy Diwali, [Flat no.]! Thank you for being a good neighbour.
- [Family name] ji, Deepavali ki hardik shubhkamnayein. [Society name] committee.
- दीपावलीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, [Family name] कुटुंब. [Society name] सोसायटी.
Timeline for Diwali 2026
