Diya decoration ideas with names
Updated 11 October 2026.
A plain clay diya costs a few rupees; a diya with someone's name on it becomes the thing they keep. Here are ideas that work at home, in a school class or for a society event.
Painting the name on the diya
Use acrylic or enamel paint on the outside only and keep it away from the oil cup. Let it dry fully (a few hours) before lighting.
- Initials on the rim: one letter per diya in white or gold paint pen, then line them up to spell a family name.
- Name on the outer belly: write in a curve with a fine acrylic marker; practise on paper first.
- Dot-art names: build each letter from small dots with the back of a brush. Forgiving if your handwriting is shaky.
- Name plus date: '[Name], Diwali 2026' turns it into a keepsake you can bring out next year.
- Two-tone diya: paint the outside one colour, leave the name area unpainted clay and write over it.
Without painting
- Kraft name tags tied around the neck of the diya with jute or mauli thread.
- A name card tucked under each diya at the dinner table, so it doubles as a place card.
- Name stickers on small pouches with the diya inside: the easiest return gift.
- Rangoli with names: a ring of diyas around each family member's name drawn in rangoli powder.
For kids, schools and societies
- Diya painting class: give each child a plain diya and a paint pen to write their own name. Ages 5+ manage it with help.
- Class Diwali gift: one diya per child with their name, so nothing gets mixed up at pick-up.
- Society welcome: a named diya at every door on Diwali evening, one per flat.
Put the name on a card in 10 seconds. Type any name into our free Diwali wish card maker, pick a line from this page and download the image or send it on WhatsApp.
Safety
- Never paint inside the oil cup; paint and lacquer can catch fire.
- Glitter and plastic stones near the wick melt. Keep them on the base.
- Let kids decorate, then the grown-up lights.
